Common Questions and Answers about Hypnosis:
What exactly is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a natural state – we are all hypnotized each and every day. Trance states are situations of deep concentration, increased awareness or enhanced learning. Do you ever feel some days that you are just “in the zone”? This level of concentration is a naturally occurring state of hypnosis. Do you ever feel like nothing can bother you, that even normal distractions seem easier to deal with? Do you ever laugh at a film or cry during a drama? You know the actors are from Hollywood, yet emotionally you react to the experience as if it were actually happening. These are also examples of hypnotic states.
At the Dallas Hypnosis Center, we use these naturally occurring states of concentration, increased creativity and the ability to step back from beliefs, situations and stressors to facilitate lasting change.
Will I actually be asleep?
You will always be aware of what is going on and your comfort is important to us. Hollywood has perpetuated the myth that in a hypnotic state one is zonked, zapped or acts as a mindless zombie. This is entertaining in Hollywood, but has no relation to reality.
I saw an Oprah guest do “past-life regression” using hypnosis, will we be doing this?
Although in America we generally have linear religious beliefs, the majority of people on the planet earth actually hold some belief in reincarnation or past lives. But make no mistake, PLR (past-life regression) is an expression of one’s religious beliefs and faith, even when on TV. At the Dallas Hypnosis Center we only practice clinical hypnotherapy. We prefer to deal with solutions as they are available today, regardless of our past experiences, and we do not practice “regress to cause” hypnosis either. Although your religious beliefs will be respected, we do not offer any religious counseling or hypnotherapy, including PLR. We have clients who are Christian, Catholic, Evangelical, Jewish, Muslim, Atheist, Buddhist, Wiccans and those who practice other religions. Unless it has direct bearing on your individual solutions, we will most likely never discuss religion during our sessions. People of all religious faiths can benefit from hypnosis, and any religious prohibition regarding hypnosis espoused by some groups most likely comes from a lack of understanding about the nature nature of clinical hypnotherapy as a profound tool for resolving present day problems.
Are there certain types of clients you will not see?
We do not provide counseling, psychotherapy or diagnosis and treatment of disease. Clients currently under the care of a doctor or mental health professional should make this provider aware of desire for clinical hypnotherapy. The Dallas Hypnosis Center provides services to all regardless of race, color, national origin, age, disability, sex, marital status, familial status, parental status, religion, sexual orientation, political beliefs, genetic information or because all or part of an individual’s income is derived from any public assistance program. Persons with disabilities who require alternative means for communication of program information (Braille, large print, audiotape, etc.) should contact our office prior to scheduling an appointment so accommodations can be made.
